5.2.21 목양실에서 (A Note From the Pastor)

함석헌 선생님의 "그대 그런 사람을 가졌는가?"라는 시에 보면 ‘만 리 길 나서는 날 처자를 맡기며 마음 놓고 갈 만한 사람 그 사람을 그대는 가졌는가/ 탔던 배 꺼지는 순간 구명대 서로 사양하며 너만은 제발 살아다오 할 그 사람을 그대는 가졌는가’라는 내용이 나옵니다.

아직 이런 친구는 못 되어도 저에게는 이런 종류의 친구가 몇 명 있습니다.

같은 교단(우리교회가 속한 AG 한국총회) 안에서 목회하는 친구들입니다. 모두가 눈앞의 편안한 길보다는 눈물을 흘리며 사명의 길을 선택한 친구들로 대다수가 작은 도시 작은 교회에서 수년간 젊음을 불태우는 친구들입니다.

코로나바이러스 팬더믹으로 인해 만날 수 없기에 매주 목요일 Zoom을 통해 북클럽을 하면서 우정을 다지던 중 제가 휴스턴에서 모이자고 했습니다. 코로나바이러스 이후 목회를 어떻게 하면 좋을지에 대한 대책도 나누고 각 교회의 장점들을 나누면서 교제하자고 했지만 저의 진짜 속셈은 작은 도시에 갇혀있는 친구들에게 바람도 쏘여주고 휴스턴의 맛난 음식을 대접하고 싶은 마음이었습니다. 휴스턴으로 오라고는 했지만 적지 않은 식사비 준비를 어떻게 하나 고민이 되었는데 어떻게 제 마음을 알았는지 두 분의 성도님과 제 딸아이가 식사비를 준비해 주었습니다. 그 순간 ‘하나님께서 이 만남을 기뻐하시는구나’ 생각하면서 한편으로는 신기했습니다.

그래서 지난 월요일에 씨에라 비스타, 투싼, 라스베가스, 솔트레이크, 스포켄, 덴버, 샌디에고에서 일곱 명의 친구 목사님이 휴스턴에 왔습니다. 아침 저녁으로 세미나 하면서 갈비, 냉면, 사시미, 곱창구이 등 맛있는 음식도 먹고 족구도 하면서 시간을 보내다 보니 2박 3일이 게눈 감추듯 금방 지나갔습니다. 돌아갈 때에는 성도님이 운영하는 공주떡집에 현미 쑥 가래떡을 부탁하여 한 덩이씩 안겨주었더니 사모님들이 좋아했다고 합니다. 모두가 헤어질 때는 저를 꼭 끌어안아주면서 ‘행복하고 유익한 시간이었다’고 말해주는데 저 또한 딸아이 먼 길 보내는 아버지 마음처럼 가슴 한쪽이 아렸습니다. 그러면서도 마음 통하는 친구들과 한 곳을 바라보며 달려갈 수 있다는 사실이 감사했고, ‘이 친구들로 인해 내가 오늘도 서 있구나’ 하는 생각이 들었습니다.

신앙생활도 사역도 혼자서는 안됩니다.

그래서 사도바울은 ‘서로 용납하고 평안의 매는 줄로 성령이 하나 되게 하신 것을 힘써 지키라’고 말씀하고 있습니다.

5월 한 달 가정에서, 교회에서, 삶의 현장에서 모두가 하나가 되고 친구가 되어주는 은혜가 있기를 소원해 봅니다.

우리는 주 안에서 잘 될 수밖에 없습니다.

In the poem “Do you have such a person?” by Ham Seok-heon, it says, “Do you have a person who can leave your wife and children on the day you are meeting/do you have a person who you could live for without hesitation.” Even though they may not be like this, I have a few friends of this kind. They are friends who are pastors in the same denomination (AG Korea General Assembly) which our church belongs to. Each of them all chose a path of mission in tears rather than the comfortable path in front of them and most of them are friends who gave their youth years serving in a small church and small city. Because of the Coronavirus pandemic we were not able to meet, so we had a book club via zoom every Thursday and I asked them to meet together here in Houston. We shared about how we could do ministry after the coronavirus and we talked about measures and shared the strengths of each church, but my real intention was to have my friends enjoy a nice day and eat good food. I told them to come to Houston, but I was worried about the finances for the meals, but through 2 of our church members and daughters they somehow understood my worries and gave finances for the meals. At that moment I thought “God is pleased with this meeting” and it was truly remarkable. So last Monday, seven pastor friends from Sierra Vista, Tucson, Las Vegas, Salt Lake, Spokane, Denver and San Diego came to Houston. During the morning and evening seminars, we ate delicious food such as galbi, naengmyeon, sashimi, and grilled gobchang, and spent time playing foot volleyball, and the 2 nights and 3 days passed by quickly. Before leaving, I asked for brown rice cake from Gongju Rice Cake house which is owned by a church member, and gave it to them. They said their wives really enjoyed it. When everyone was leaving, they hugged me tightly sand said “It was a happy and fruitful time,” and I also felt like a father who was sending his daughter very far away. But at the same time, I was grateful that I could run with my friends looking towards one place and I thought, “because of these friends, I am standing here today”.

In your spiritual life and ministry you should not be alone.

That is why Apostle Paul says, “Be patient with one another and strive to united with the spirit of peace.”

In the month of May, at home, at church, in your life, I wish everyone the grace of being united and becoming friends with one another.
